The Fontaine des Innocents. The stories of a Parisian masterpiece - Exhibition catalog

WRITTEN IN FRENCH

The architectural history of the Fontaine des Innocents is intimately linked to that of Parisian urban planning and its evolution over the centuries. It was in the Middle Ages that one of the first public fountains in Paris was offered to the inhabitants of the district surrounding the Church of the Holy Innocents. In 1549, it was replaced by a new monument unveiled during the royal entry of Henry II into Paris, decorated with reliefs by Jean Goujon and designed as an ode to water in all its forms. This fountain was immediately recognized as a masterpiece of the Renaissance, an exceptional milestone in the history of French art. Over the centuries, it has continued to inspire artists. Ingres, Barye, Carpeaux, Doisneau, Atget and Cartier-Bresson, all drew from the source.

Exhibition at the musée Carnavalet-Histoire de Paris from 24 April 2024 to 25 August 2024.
